If you would like to have a peep at A Death at the White Camellia Orphanage...
1. Please send your email address to smaragdineknot [at] gmail [dot] com.
2. Magic minions will then reply to you with the first chapter as a .pdf file attachment.
3. If you would like to be put on a mailing list for a brief newsletter with news about the books of Marly Youmans, please say so in your email. Said techno-minions will respond when they feel so moved. Occasionally. Possibly from time to time. When they crawl out from under the beds with the dust bunnies.
Seek Giacometti’s “The Palace at 4 a.m.” Go back two hours. See towers and curtain walls of matchsticks, marble, marbles, light, cloud at stasis. Walk in. The beggar queen is dreaming on her throne of words…You have arrived at the web home of Marly Youmans, maker of novels, poetry collections, and stories, as well as the occasional fantasy for younger readers.

Alas, I must once again remind large numbers of Chinese salesmen and other worldwide peddlers that if they fall into the Gulf of Spam, they will be eaten by roaming Balrogs. The rest of you, lovers of grace, poetry, and horses (nod to Yeats--you do not have to be fond of horses), feel free to leave fascinating missives and curious arguments.

I'm going to pass on this offer, as I've already ordered my copy of the book and would like to keep the reading of it an un-interrupted experience... or as close to that as I can manage. I ordered it on Amazon, together with a copy of the anthology, Ghosts by Gaslight, which I'd been meaning to order but kept forgetting. The latter should be arriving this morning, and the new novel within ten days. So, I shall have a teensy-weensy bit of new Marly that I shall attempt to eke out until DWCO arrives. I may have to consume the short story a few sentences at a time to make it last!
ReplyDeleteSaint Clive! How good of you... They are very different creatures, those two.
ReplyDeleteThe Hawthornean piece moves at more of a 19th-century pace, the novel a bit more briskly!
Dear Marly Marketer,
ReplyDeleteThis is a GREAT first step. But if'n you want a chance to make this viral, you should just make the first chappy available without an email addy and that process up front.
I don't know who I am sending my addy to, nor is there a privacy policy. And there are many books that I can peer into and read extended samples without prior constraints. Or I can take my Nook into B&N and read anything free for an hour.
An alternate plan for you would be to produce a specially special PDF file of the first chapter, some reviews, and a special discount code for online purchase. And then encourage all of your bloggy friends to post the PDF file - and encourage readers to forward it around.
This won't guarantee virally viral distributation, but it certainly adds to the likelihood that it may happen.
See my white paper called "Unlock the Gate" about white papers, and why "not forcing people to fill out a form first" (or in your case, sending an email address first via email) can be a good approach. You can find that paper here: http://www.6by7reports.com/free_stuff.php#wp01
Or I could be wrong. Happens a lot.
Mucho luck, and I look forward to reading the new book.
Gary
Gary, just a first step--more to come. I have to work with my publisher on more!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the advice--running off to voice lesson now--
