Besançon Christmas

Happy Christmas Eve...
Joseph tends the baby (i.e. the teeny-weeny Word or Logos)
while Mary reads the Word;
the pure and impure animals are joined in the pen,
and the ass is munching on Joseph's halo!
From the 15th century Besançon Book of Hours.
French, vellum.

  1. 'tis Christmas Day but not officially. Our house still slumbereth. I have nothing historical or mystical to offer but I will later drink to our friendship. A precious thing that must be celebrated.

    1. Merry 2nd day of Christmas! Just barely here... but perhaps you are wandering around the house in the early morning there. I had a wonderful Christmas Eve and Day--and I, too, am very glad of your friendship!

  2. Merry Christmas! We are surrounded by unpacked moving boxes in our new home, and I am recovering from an idiotic fall I took down the stairs as we moved out of the old place. A snake is wintering in our new basement, the heat works, the well water is freakishly pure, and the surrounding woods are full of birds. Hope your Christmas week is as pleasant as ours!

    1. How could it be? You sound as if you have found your own little Eden--though coming after the unfortunate Fall--and the snake is asleep.

      Merry 4th day of Christmas!

Alas, I must once again remind large numbers of Chinese salesmen and other worldwide peddlers that if they fall into the Gulf of Spam, they will be eaten by roaming Balrogs. The rest of you, lovers of grace, poetry, and horses (nod to Yeats--you do not have to be fond of horses), feel free to leave fascinating missives and curious arguments.
