Alas, I must once again remind large numbers of Chinese salesmen and other worldwide peddlers that if they fall into the Gulf of Spam, they will be eaten by roaming Balrogs. The rest of you, lovers of grace, poetry, and horses (nod to Yeats--you do not have to be fond of horses), feel free to leave fascinating missives and curious arguments.

Marly: Just to say I dithered over a week or so, then announced my withdrawal from Tone Deaf. No big deal, the explanations are there for anyone who's interested but I can say they're not directly medical. Since VR's stroke my domestic life has changed radically and with it my priorities. I have a novel, started in 2018 and which ground to a halt some years ago after 56,000 words. I'm not satisfied with the narrative as such but there are passages, characterisations and ideas which I think have value. Trouble is, there's nobody with the necessary skills I can turn to (and no, this isn't a covert plea for you to step in), all our now dead.
ReplyDeleteDismembering what I've got and tinkering with the skeleton are tasks I must face alone, and for the first time I seriously doubt my authorial skills. In any case, a larger event may overtake me before I'm done. But this is what I should concentrate on, this - whatever my doubts - is what I'm here on earth for. Plus the pursuit of fellowship with such masterwork creators as Franz Schubert, et al.
You've been a good friend; you've been generous with what I suspect is a rare commodity in your life, and that's time. We are aeons apart in our personal philosophies and yet you've never wagged a religiose finger. Seventy-five, eh? The prime of life. TTFN
I'm not 75! The Village Library is! I'm a mere young chit of 70! Haha.... Actually the library is older but was incorporated (or some such) 75 years ago.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm sorry you are leaving Tone Deaf, and I'm even more sorry about VR's stroke (the more important thing--sympathy for a changing life.) I hope she is doing better and feeling stronger. Growing older is not an easy path.
You're right that I've been too busy of late. A major family death this year and then two months of being sick with histamine intolerance (who knew there was such a thing? Not me, alas) have put me more behind than usual. One of my two in-house progeny has moved out, so there's a bit less to do, but I am rather backlogged and not getting much writing done. And have failed of several writing-related promises, so I'm not making any more this year. That said, I don't mind looking at something later.
We human beings have a yearning to bring new things (whether a novel or something else entirely) into being, and we are most fully ourselves when we do so. The genesis of the made thing changes us in a good way and is also a genesis in the spirit. Your desire to work on that story seems exactly right.
