"The love of one's country is a splendid thing. But why should love stop at the border?"
-Pablo Casals
Time to recall patriot ancestors who dyed the earth in blood for the cause of Lady Liberty and to celebrate the ongoing project of freedom and those who have striven to reform... My day? A giant potluck with the Scouts at Crumhorn Mountain and watching the fireworks reflected on the surface of James Fenimore Cooper's Glimmerglass.
Seek Giacometti’s “The Palace at 4 a.m.” Go back two hours. See towers and curtain walls of matchsticks, marble, marbles, light, cloud at stasis. Walk in. The beggar queen is dreaming on her throne of words…You have arrived at the web home of Marly Youmans, maker of novels, poetry collections, and stories, as well as the occasional fantasy for younger readers.

Alas, I must once again remind large numbers of Chinese salesmen and other worldwide peddlers that if they fall into the Gulf of Spam, they will be eaten by roaming Balrogs. The rest of you, lovers of grace, poetry, and horses (nod to Yeats--you do not have to be fond of horses), feel free to leave fascinating missives and curious arguments.
Happy July 4th, Marly!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the fantastic quote.
For, indeed, why should it stop at the border, or be turned back?
ReplyDeleteGlimmerglass is so beautiful! I really love Cooperstown. My husband used to play baseball exposition games on Doubleday field. SO fun!
ReplyDeleteHello, Crystal--
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming by and leaving a note, Ms. Wordsmith. That's an interesting connection... Would be a warm day for baseball there today.
