Seek Giacometti’s “The Palace at 4 a.m.” Go back two hours. See towers and curtain walls of matchsticks, marble, marbles, light, cloud at stasis. Walk in. The beggar queen is dreaming on her throne of words… You have arrived at the web home of Marly Youmans, maker of novels, poems, and stories, as well as the occasional fantasy. D. G. Myers: "A writer who has more resolutely stood her ground against the tide of literary fashion would be difficult to name."

Makoto Fujimura on the core of existence

Alas, I must once again remind large numbers of Chinese salesmen and other worldwide peddlers that if they fall into the Gulf of Spam, they will be eaten by roaming Balrogs. The rest of you, lovers of grace, poetry, and horses (nod to Yeats--you do not have to be fond of horses), feel free to leave fascinating missives and curious arguments.
Wonderful,and absolutely true. Thanks,Marly.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I just read a book that struck me as deeply, terribly "away from that love." Well written, well made. But far away.
ReplyDeleteMako is very special.
Oh yes, absolutely the truth! So well said that I'm going to save this and share.
ReplyDeleteIt was even better when I listened to his speech all the way through. And made me quietly so grateful that, almost 40 years after my own graduation, I made the choices I have made in my life. A lot of what I want to do now is help younger people make that choice. It's so much harder now, and takes even greater courage.
ReplyDeleteI have a transcript, and I imagine it will appear on line soon... probably on his blog.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is good to look back and see that one survived growing up and eventually made right choices!
